After 48 years of serving the City of Guelph in the Parks and Recreation Department, Vikki Dupuis, Manager Recreation Facilities - Operations has decided to retire.
Vikki has built her career on a passion for community building, the importance of programming for people of all ages and an enthusiasm for leadership.
When Vikki was first hired by the Guelph Recreation Commission in 1969, to work as a camp leader at the Barber Scout camp, the experience was more than just a summer job; it was a pivotal moment in Vikki's life and ultimately lead her to pursing an honours degree in Recreation. After she graduated from the University of Waterloo, she returned to the City seasonally, as the booker of outdoor sports facilities, until she took on community programming at Westwood Public School in 1984 -- a position she kept for 17 years. When the West End Community Centre opened in 2001, Vikki was successful in the facility manager position, and she took great pride in the team she was a part of and the facility she supervised and shaped to the thriving centre it is today.
Vikki could always be counted on to go the extra mile -- she's built Santa Claus Parade floats, supervised the decorating of City Hall for Christmas, and organized Christmas bazaars at the Guelph Farmer's Market (are you sensing a theme?...did you know she decorates 7 Christmas trees in her house?).
Corporately, Vikki has played a significant role in shaping many policies and practices that exist today. She has served as a member of the CUPE 241 negotiating committee, the NUME Joint Job Evaluation committee, the Group of 22, the Guelph Sports Advisory Committee and numerous other committees. In addition she is a member of the Ontario Recreation Facilities Association Technical Advisory Committee and active member of Parks and Recreation Ontario.
Nearly five decades after the City of Guelph first hired Vikki, she remains passionate about kids and camp, about community programming and about being a strong leader. She'll continue to look for new ways to contribute to our community, while also planning a trip to Italy with Jake to find her roots, and taking a cooking class or two! – (all of you who know Vikki, will know that she will end up teaching that class!).
The staff that she has mentored over the years, the patrons, stakeholders, community groups and organizations of which she served with pride and her colleagues across the corporation will miss her knowledge and presence as she begins a new chapter of her life. At Vikki’s request, there not be a corporate gathering – she is admittedly not good at goodbyes, however, I’m sure many will find a way to wish her well.
Vikki’s last day at work will be Friday, February 24th and her official retirement date is April 28th, 2017.
Please join me in congratulating Vikki and wishing her all the best.
