ORFA Director of Training, Research and Development, Terry Piche chats with Ian Storey of I.B. Storey the Official Rink Engineering Consultant of the NHL® regarding new technologies in ice making equipment that has entered the marketplace. One new system uses magnetic bearings that levitates the compressor drive shaft allowing for frictionless, oil free operation that results in quiet operation that requires less maintenance costs. The system leverages OpteonTM Refrigerant, the Official Refrigerant Solution of the NHL®. As Canada’s recreational ice sheet inventory creeps closer to the end of their natural life cycle, owners will be seeking all forms of options. We will learn if these systems are merely a thing of the future or if they are in fact already being installed. Additional discussion on reducing energy and what is new in this regard will wrap up the chat. The session will end with an open Q & A.
