Professional Development Sessions – Monday May 1, 2023

  • Building A Positive Working Relationship With Regional Public Health Inspectors

Public health inspectors are an important part of our industries compliance check and balances. Understanding that not all regions are focused on the same priorities, as well as they may have specific regional issues to be focused on will be addressed. This session will explore how to build a positive relationship with your local public health inspector. Having open communication is essential to success.

  • Emergency Preparedness Week Is Held The First Week Of May Each Year – Is Our Industry Ready?

The ORFA continues to raise awareness of our lack of preparedness as an industry to effectively respond to a noxious or toxic gas leak in a facility or properly plan to safely offer a community event. This session will explore the different agencies and tools that are available to focus on improving our level of awareness and response.

  • The Ontario Municipal Health And Safety Professional Association – Is It For You?

The Ontario Municipal Health & Safety Professionals Association is a professional, not-for-profit association committed to improving health and safety in municipal workplaces in Ontario. Membership is open to any person who has these responsibilities.

  • Playground And Sports Fields Risk Management Best Practices

As members focus on grounds operations it is important to reconfirm industry best practices on risk reduction principles for all outdoor recreation infrastructure. What impacts insurance – impacts how we conduct business. This session will explore root causes to the potential for litigation and what needs to be in place to reduce the potential for these types of events. Splash pads, outdoor pools, playgrounds, community festivals are just some of the topics to be covered.

Professional Development Sessions – Monday October 16, 2023

  • TSSA Advisory Update
The TSSA Unattended Refrigeration Ice Sheet Advisory is expected to be released early in 2023. This session will explore the impact it is having in our industry and what tools are available to help ensure compliance.
  • NEW ORFA/IPE Risk Management Manual Development
The Ontario Recreation Facilities Association (ORFA) and Intact Public Entities (IPE) have invested in the development of a sector Risk Management Manual that will be made available across Canada and beyond. The manual is considered a complete resource on risk management based on the experiences of both ORFA and IPE. The manual content will be showcased.
  • The Advancement Of The Use Of C02 Refrigerant 
In Ontario C02 as a refrigerant had a slow start in Ontario when compared to other regions but in the last while there has been significant investment in this technology. This session will have a variety of member communities discuss the decision-making process to move in that direction as well as the return on investment.
  • Emerging Issues and Trends
Each year our sector has a variety of new challenges, shifts in technology or improved techniques. This presentation will showcase what is happening in our industry and how the ORFA and/or members are addressing these changes. Watch for more details.
