Threads of Life

The Association for Workplace Tragedy Family Support, known as Threads of Life, is a Canadian registered charity dedicated to supporting families after a workplace fatality, life-altering injury, or occupational disease. Our network of family members and corporate partners believes traumatic workplace injuries, occupational diseases and deaths are preventable. Shirley Hickman who lost her son in an ice arena tragedy was the seed to this organization.

Presenter: Shirley Hickman

Technical Safety BC (TSBC)

TSBC has investigated several refrigeration-related incidents in BC, such as in Fernie (2017) and Kamloops (2022). The lessons learned from those investigations continue to shape how TSBC approaches ice arena refrigeration compliance and safety. TSBC representatives will share how administrative valve management programs are tools that can improve awareness and safety in any refrigeration plant and will provide information about relevant refrigeration safety orders.

Corey Phelps - Corey Phelps is a Senior Safety Officer with the Safety Management Approaches team at Technical Safety BC. Before joining the Safety Management Approaches team, Corey worked as a Boiler Safety Officer and was an investigator on the Fernie incident investigation team in 2017. He is a National Board Authorized Inspector, In-Service Inspector and Repair Inspector. Prior to joining Technical Safety BC in 2014, Corey worked in Power Engineering and Chemical processing fields and has experience working with ammonia refrigeration systems, high pressure power plants, processing plants and drilling and well service operations in the oil and gas industry. With over 30 years’ experience, he advocates for client education to improve safety outcomes.

Karen Stainton - Karen Stainton works on TSBC’s Client Education team and has been with the organization for 10 years. She has extensive experience in learning & development and education and will be moderating the presentation.
